On one occasion, a woman suffering with “a sickness caused by a spirit” was healed by Jesus. He said this woman was “a daughter of Abraham” who “Satan has bound for eighteen long years.” Despite being a righteous woman, she was bound by Satan. Her sin didn’t cause this issue and obviously she had faith to receive healing from the Lord. Putting it all together, this woman appears to have been suffering from a bloodline curse of some kind.
God doesn’t punish children for the sins of their parents. Yet, the lifestyle choices of our ancestors impact us. Consider the infants of mothers who are addicted to drugs. These babies often suffer horrible symptoms of withdrawal. This is called neonatal abstinence syndrome. Likewise, babies who are exposed to alcohol in the womb can develop fetal alcohol syndrome. Spiritually, the actions of our ancestors can also have an impact. Exodus 34:7 says God visits “the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
Rebellion against God by our ancestors, a trade made with demonic powers for success, a dedication to evil spirits or a covenant that an ancestor made with forces of darkness can give the devil a legal right to attack us. Demons administer these attacks. Fortunately, Jesus “redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us.” Christ broke all generational curses through His death and resurrection.
Christ’s death for our sins is a legal ruling which is enforced by our faith. He died for all, but only by faith in Him are we declared not guilty by His shed blood. In the same way, the blood of Jesus removes Satan’s legal right to use generational curses to torment us, but evil spirits which are already afflicting us may need to be forcefully evicted. The legal ruling of Christ’s death must be enforced.
During His ministry, Jesus healed “all who were oppressed by the devil.” Now that He’s seated at the right hand of the Father, things haven’t changed. In fact, we are seated with Him! The blood of Jesus breaks the power of all generational curses and a firm command in His name evicts any evil spirits.
Legally breaking curses
Revelation 12:10 says that Satan is “the accuser of our brethren” who accuses us before God day and night. Verse 11 adds that we overcome him “because of the blood of the Lamb.” By the blood of Jesus, we revoke and remove Satan’s legal accusations against us. A person with a demonic affliction caused by a generational curse must bring this issue before the courts of heaven. First, we confess our sin. Next, we confess any sin in our bloodline and remove any trade, dedication or covenant made with demons by an ancestor. Finally, we state our desire to be set free from demonic affliction and proclaim our willingness to serve the Lord.
“Father, You are my Judge. I enter Your courts with praise. I give thanks to You and I praise You. Lord, if I confess my sin, You are faithful and just to forgive me and to cleanse me of all unrighteousness. I ask forgiveness for any and all sin in my life. Forgive me for any rebellion in my bloodline that Satan is using to accuse me. Father, forgive me for any time an ancestor of mine made a trade with a demonic entity for personal gain. Cancel these transactions in Jesus’ name. Undo any success or blessings from these trades that I’m presently benefiting from. I want nothing to do with this because You alone are my Source. Father, forgive me for any dedications in my family line made to an evil spirit or the devil. Forgive me for any covenants my ancestors made with powers of darkness. Annul these contracts in the name of Jesus. I was bought with the blood of Christ. I’m not my own. I belong to You and I honor you with my heart, soul, mind and strength. Thank you, Lord, for remembering me by the blood of Jesus. Thank you that the blood removes any accusation against me. I want to be delivered of any and all demonic affliction and I present myself as a living sacrifice to you. I was redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to me from my ancestors with the precious blood of Christ. Thank You Lord!”
Deliverance
Deliverance is the practice of casting out demons in the name of Jesus. This process involves pleading the blood of Jesus, binding the demon in Jesus’ name, commanding the evil spirit to be quiet and be still if it’s acting up and then ordering the demon to come out in the name of Jesus.
Plead the blood
First, plead the blood of Jesus.
“Father, in the name of Jesus, thank you. Thank you for Your Son Jesus, the Lamb of God who shed His perfect, precious blood for our sins. I cover myself and ____ with the blood of Jesus. I sprinkle it freely upon us, because it was freely shed. We are protected by the blood. We honor the blood of Jesus, which has saved us, healed us and delivered us.”
Stretch your hand toward the person and declare authoritatively: “Be covered in the blood of Jesus.”
Bind the demon
Next, bind the demon.
“Evil spirit causing ______, I bind you in the name of Jesus. I rob you of your strength in the name of Jesus.”
If you know you’re dealing with a specific spirit, you can call it out by name:
“Spirit of infirmity, I bind you in the name of Jesus. I rob you of your strength in the name of Jesus.”
Don’t ask the evil spirit for its name. This only draws out the process and the demon will probably just lie anyway.
Command the evil spirit to leave in the name of Jesus
“I command you to come out in the name of Jesus! Come out immediately in the name of Jesus!”
If the evil spirit appears to resist, tell it to speed up.
“Come out in Jesus’ name! Speed up! You are legally evicted by the blood of Jesus. Go!”
If it starts talking, tell it to be quiet and come out in Jesus’ name. If it starts acting up, tell it to be still and come out in Jesus’ name.
“In the name of Jesus, be quiet, be still and come out! Do not delay! Come out in Jesus’ name!”
Ideally, the afflicted person is delivered without any visible manifestations. Sometimes, however, demons are expelled through coughing or perhaps even vomiting. Don’t be concerned by that. If the afflicted person is distressed, choking, having difficulty breathing or something like that, cover them in the blood of Jesus.
“I cover you with the blood of Jesus. I sprinkle the blood of Jesus on you.”
Laying hands on them and commanding them to be at peace in Jesus’ name is another option.
Place your hands on the person and declare authoritatively: “In the name of Jesus, be at peace.”
This is only recommended when the evil spirits are visibly being expelled, after they’ve been commanded to be still, to be quiet and to leave.
Lay hands
Once a person is delivered, it’s a good time to rebuke any debilitating effects of the demonic affliction.
“Father, in the name of Jesus, let all the effects of this affliction be taken away. May ____ walk strong and upright, covered in the blood of Christ, in Jesus’ name.”
After this, lay hands on the person so they receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. This is the standard practice for new believers and for that reason it’s considered a basic doctrine.
Place your hands on the person and declare authoritatively: “Be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Spiritual warfare
Finally, we must submit to God and resist any demonic attacks. Dedicate your life to Christ and renew your mind. Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Rebuke any thought or feeling that doesn’t line up with the reality of heaven and replace it with the facts: we’re saved, healed, delivered and blessed in Christ. Confess the relevant promises of God, depending on the situation. In this way, believers can withstand demonic attacks, avoiding the corruption of our minds and rejecting any demonic attempts to seduce us into receiving another spirit. Do not give the devil an opportunity!
