After Satan is bound, there will be a new heaven and a new earth. This won’t be a completely new creation, just a renovation of the existing creation. The Day of the Lord will destroy the wicked, and in the process, it will cause severe damage to the physical earth. The earth will need to be renovated before Christ reigns. The Lord will make all things new. Animals will no longer be violent, people won’t struggle in work and most individuals will live long lives. [Isaiah 65:17-25] For Christians in New Jerusalem, it will be even better. There will no longer be any crying, pain or death.
Along with a new heaven and a new earth, John saw New Jerusalem come down out of Heaven. The Lord Himself will dwell with His people. Christians will live in the New Jerusalem as priests and kings with Christ during His 1,000-year reign. New Jerusalem will be a massive city with a huge wall. There will be pearly gates, streets paved with gold and precious stones everywhere. On a side note, there won’t be a temple in the city, yet there will be a temple during the 1,000-year reign of Christ. [Revelation 21:22; Ezekiel 40-48] What gives?
Well, after New Jerusalem comes down from Heaven, it will likely hover over the earth. After all, John never saw it land and it will provide light for the world below. [Revelation 21:23-24] The center of New Jerusalem will be directly above Mount Zion, which will be the tallest mountain in the world. [Isaiah 2:2] The new temple will extend up into the New Jerusalem, meaning Christ will reign from New Jerusalem and the new temple at the same time, from the same throne room.
