Although Israel condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, their criticism has been mild. That said, the Israelis tried to take advantage of Russia’s divided attention. While Russia was focused on Ukraine, Israel decided to bomb Syria. Three Syrian soldiers were killed in the airstrike. Talk about mixed messages.
Of course, it’s not unusual for Israel to bomb Syria. It is uncommon, however, for these strikes to affect the Russians. Yet, a few months back, Israeli warplanes fired missiles at storage depots on the port of Latakia. Russia effectively controls the port of Latakia, as well as the port of Tartus. In fact, during its invasion of Ukraine, Russia positioned a significant naval presence in the Mediterranean.
Perhaps in retaliation for the December strike, Russia has allegedly been jamming airplane signals in Syria. According to Israel, this jammer has affected its airspace. Regardless, Israel has tried not to escalate things with Russia. After all, it’s clear that Russia isn’t leaving Syria anytime soon. There’s a reason that many Syrian students are now learning Russian. It’s also why Syria’s parliament handed over control of the port of Tartus back in 2019. That same year, The Times of Israel reported that Russia was considering several commercial projects in Syria, including building a railway across Syria and Iraq.
Without question, it’s difficult to see Israel and many of their Arab neighbors embracing Russia’s ambitious plans in Syria. For the time being, they’re looking the other way. Indeed, Ukraine’s president suggested that peace negotiations with Russia should take place In Israel. Ukraine’s Ambassador to Israel reportedly said, “We do believe that Israel is the only democratic state in the world that has great relations with both Ukraine and Russia.” While that may be the case at the moment, over time, tensions with Russia are likely going to grow. The post-war reconstruction of Syria will set the stage for the Daniel 11:22 War.
